Hip joint Anatomy

Hip is a ball and socket type of joint. Upper end of thigh bone (femur) is rounded ball shaped fit into the cup shaped cavity (acetabulum) of pelvis bone. Smooth cartilage covers the femur head and acetabulum to enable the comfortable movement of joint. Socket area of acetabulum is covered by thick cartilage called labrum. Hip is the second largest stress bearing area of the body.
